Biography
Youkyoung Kim, born in Busan, South Korea, began her piano studies at the age of five and entered Sunhwa Arts High School in 2002. Ms. Kim completed her bachelor’s degree at Seoul National University where she studied with Junghye Ra and Nayoung Kim. Ms. Kim has also earned her Master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music under Awadagin Pratt.
Ms. Kim has received numerous prizes and awards in her native Korea, including First Prizes at the Korea Chopin Competition and the Eumyoun Competition, Second Prizes at the Samick-Seiler Piano Competition, the International Piano Competition and Eumag Chunchu Magazine Competition, and Third Prize at the Suri National Music Competition. In 2013, Ms. Kim won the First Prize at the College-Conservatory of Music Piano Concerto Competition, allowing her to perform Mozart’s D Minor Piano Concerto with the CCM Philharmonia Orchestra.
Ms. Kim has participated in a wide variety of festivals, including Arts of the Piano at CCM, the Seoul National University International Piano Academy, and the International Summer Music Festival in Cleve, Germany. Ms. Kim has had an abundance of performing experience and has given many recitals as a soloist and a collaborative artist throughout several venues in South Korea, Germany, and the United States, including Pan Kunstforum Niederrhein, Seoul National University College of Music Concert Hall, Robert J. Werner Hall, Watson Hall, Cohen Family Studio Theater, and Corbett Auditorium. She was selected as a Young Artist Performer after she won the Eumyoun Competition and the Korea Chopin Competition, allowing her to perform in Youngsan Art Hall along with her fellow Young Artist Performers. Ms. Kim has taken part in master classes given by musicians such as Menahem Pressler, Leon Fleisher, Choong Mo Kang, Yoshiukazu Nagai, Enrico Elisi, Hee Sung Joo, Myoung-joo Lee, Ory Shihor, Wha Kyung Byun, and Richard Egarr.
Ms Kim is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music under Awadagin Pratt.
