Biography

Nathan Ryland began playing piano at the age of five, studying with Dr. Grace Long from age six through high school. He progressed quickly, and was soon winning numerous local competitions. He moved on to larger competitions, eventually winning the state and regional levels of the MTNA performance contest during his senior year of high school, competing as a finalist at the 2013 national convention. During this past summer, Nathan was selected as a winner of the Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition at the Brevard Music Center, as well as the second place winner of the BMC Piano Competition. He also competed in the Budapest Concert Division of the LA International Liszt Competition, receiving third prize. Nathan was selected as the piano winner of this year’s UNT Concerto Competition, earning a performance with the UNT Symphony Orchestra. He has participated in summer study with Elisabeth Pridonoff and Norman Krieger at the Brevard Music Center Institute, and has received masterclass instruction from internationally acclaimed artists such as Boris Slutsky and Haochen Zhang. He also enjoys composition, and was awarded the first prize in the Large Ensemble division of the TMTA Original Composition Contest for his orchestral piece “Forever.” Nathan is a sophomore at the University of North Texas, where he studies with Dr. Pamela Mia Paul.
